Graduate Program in Civil Construction

General Information
The Master’s Degree in Civil Construction began in 2005. Its lines of research and associated projects have evolved to follow national and international trends, meeting scientific and market demands. The projects initially focused on materials. Subsequently, research projects were created in the area of Construction Project and Design Management. The program comprises 19 professors (18 permanent and 1 collaborator) from three departments of UFMG’s Engineering School (Materials and Construction Engineering, Structural Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering), all involved in research in the area of Civil Construction, whether specifically studying the relationship between structure, properties and processing of civil construction materials, or addressing its insertion in construction systems or focusing on managerial aspects of civil construction projects.. Accordingly, the course’s guiding principle is the systemic approach to the construction supply chain, considering different issues (characterization, processing, use of materials, and construction management), aims achieving the best performance from these materials and from construction systems, and considering the managerial vector as one that supports the implementation of innovative methods, techniques, and tools in construction.

Scope
The UFMG Master’s Degree in Civil Construction has Construction Technology as a focus area that unfolds into two lines of research: Civil Construction Materials and Management in Civil Construction. Based on the objectives of an academic master’s degree, its purpose is to train qualified individuals to work in the field, whether as researchers, professors, or professionals in the construction market. Considering the socioeconomic relevance of the Civil Construction sector in Brazil, the course is geared toward the study of instruments and methodologies to stimulate and facilitate the application of new technologies and processes to contribute toward improving civil construction materials. Additionally, it seeks to develop strategies and management methods to ensure business competitiveness and construction quality. The course is characterized by its multidisciplinary nature and its strong regional weight, as the UFMG is the State’s most important center for higher education, and this is one of the programs that support graduate training for Civil Construction-oriented professionals. Furthermore, the program prepares researchers and professionals to work in the State’s various regions.

Goals
The Master’s Degree in Civil Construction, with Focus Area in Building Technology, aims to:
1. prepare researchers to develop relevant works in the field;
2. qualify teachers to meet the demand for expansion of technical and higher education in the area;
3. qualify professionals to meet the demands of innovation and complexity that characterize civil construction undertakings;
4. support regional and national scientific and technological development in building materials.

Research lines
Currently, the research lines of the Civil Construction Master’s Degree are Civil Construction Materials and Civil Construction Management. In the Civil Construction Materials line, projects are developed involving the study of the structure, properties and processing of metallic materials and materials based on portland cement, as well as their performance within the construction system. It has also been studied the synthesis and characterization of geopolymers and the incorporation of waste of different natures in civil construction materials, as well as the prevention of pathologies in these materials. In the Construction Management line, the projects involve the characterization and improvement of the process of design and construction of the build environment, , considering the use of information and collaboration technologies, and the development of methods and tools to ensure quality and performance, including the sustainability aspects.

Selection process
The selection process for the Master’s Degree in Civil Construction is held annually and usually takes place in the latter half of the year. The selection process for 2017 began with the publication of selection notice in the Brazilian Official Gazette in August 2016 and involved several stages: enrollment, proof of English proficiency, analysis of resume and school transcripts, and interview. 25 seats were offered, 16 of which were for the materials research line and 9 for the management research line.
